Fashion tip when shopping for Burlesque evening wear.

Here is a little bit of advice when shopping for a Burlesque style dress to wear on a special occasion. A common misunderstanding when it comes to Burlesque clothing is that more is better. This is true when putting Rhinestones and glitter on a STAGE costume, you can never have too much. But you have to be careful when your applying this rule to evening wear. There are some "Burlesque" dresses out there that have an absurd amount of bows, frills and tulle. If your not careful these dresses will make you look a over the top gift wrapped present for an eight year old girl. Keep a good editing eye when shopping for so called "Burlesque" dresses. Unless of course the gift wrap look is what your going for, then cover yourself head to toe and go completely over the top to make a statement.

The art of Burlesque dates back to Victorian London in the 1830s, where it was originally a form of performance used to parody popular culture such as Shakespeare or opera. Shows were performed by an all-female cast mimicking the role of the patriarch in society. These attractive, under-dressed women pushed new boundaries, often causing prudish outrage, which of course further fuelled the demand for burlesque shows.

Throughout the 20th century burlesque gradually transformed into the erotic striptease that we know it as today. The burlesque outfits became more elaborate, with corsets, ruffles and feathers becoming commonplace. The 1940s saw a period of censorship, during which time the burlesque industry experienced somewhat of a decline. It’s popularity came and went across the next few decades, until the 1990s when burlesque dancing saw a resurgence in popularity thanks to stars such as Dita Von Teese.
