Director of Football

You are not the manager. You are the Director of Football. The Transfer Manager.

The head coach is his own man. He picks the eleven, sets them out in his own shape, and decides who plays. You will not overrule him — that is not a missing feature, it is the job. What you decide is who is in the building at all.

Sign, sell, loan, scout the world, run the academy, and keep the wage bill on the right side of the owner's patience. The coach wins or loses with the squad you gave him. The owner judges you on it.

START AT THE BOTTOM
Three clubs at the foot of the English pyramid are willing to take a chance on you. Pick one, put your name on the contract, and start work. The road up is long and it is meant to be.

A WORLD, NOT A LEAGUE
Fifty countries. Full pyramids in every one of them. Every club is real inside the game — its own squad, its own head coach, its own director of football, its own board and its own books. Sixty thousand footballers are out there, and your scouts have heard of a few dozen of them.

SCOUTING IS KNOWLEDGE, NOT OMNISCIENCE
A rating is a rumour until somebody has actually watched him. Send a scout to a player and you learn what he can do; send one to a region and you come back with names nobody else has. A sharper eye reads a player more accurately. A faster one only reports sooner.

THE ACADEMY
Boys who are yours before anybody else can have them. They cost nothing and they are on nobody's books. At seventeen your youth coach gives you his verdict and you decide: a contract, or let him go. Some of them will be the best player at this club one day. Most of them will not.

TRANSFERS THAT HAVE CONSEQUENCES
A fee, a wage, and a contract length, agreed in a negotiation where neither the selling club nor the player has to tell you the number in his head. What you sign today is a fact for years afterwards. Nothing quietly recalculates a wage later to save you from it.

THE BOOKS
Prize money, television money, gate receipts, the wage bill, the facilities you build and the ones you cannot afford yet. And your own money, separate from the club's: a salary, shares in clubs anywhere in the country, and a stake in a footballer's transfer rights if you fancy the risk.

FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT WITHOUT THE TACTICS BOARD
If you want to draw arrows on a pitch, this is not that game. This is the office above the dressing room: the transfer market, the scouting network, the youth setup, the accounts, and a boardroom that wants a return on all of it. Football or soccer, whichever word you use for it — this is the club-building half of the sport, and it is the half nobody lets you play.
