Sideloading on Android TV, and what to install once you can

Android TV runs the same operating system as a phone with a very different launcher. It will install ordinary APKs, but the platform gives you no browser, no file manager and a remote instead of a touchscreen. Three obstacles, each with a straightforward answer.

Turning on installs from unknown sources

  1. Open Settings, then Device Preferences, then About Menu names vary by manufacturer, but About is the common thread.
  2. Select Build seven times This unlocks Developer options, exactly as on a phone.
  3. Go back, open Security and restrictions Turn on unknown sources for the specific app that will do the installing.
  4. Leave it on only while you need it A TV in a shared house is worth locking back down afterwards.

Getting the file onto the TV

Pick one of three routes depending on what you have available.

RouteWhat you needBest for
USB driveA stick formatted FAT32 or exFAT, plus a file manager on the TVOne-off installs, no network involved
Send from a phoneA transfer app on both devices, on the same networkRegular use, no cables
Downloader app on the TVA direct link to the APKWhen you know the URL and have nothing else

SHAREit

Smart Media4U Technology Pte.Ltd.
4,3 1 Md+ 85 MB

Transfers over a direct WiFi link between phone and TV without touching the internet, which is the fastest route for a large file.

ES Explorateur de Fichiers

ES Global
4,6 100 M+ 69 MB

A file manager that runs acceptably with a remote and can install from a USB stick.

ShareMe

Xiaomi Inc.
4,6 1 Md+ 28 MB

Simple phone-to-device transfer, useful when the TV box has almost nothing on it yet.

Apps worth sideloading

The TV Play Store carries a fraction of the catalogue. These are the phone apps that work well with a remote, which is the real filter.

1

VLC

Videolabs
4,0 500 M+ 46 MB

Plays local files and network shares, and its TV interface is designed for a directional pad rather than adapted to one.

2

Web Video Cast

InstantBits Inc
4,6 50 M+ 169 MB

Useful for pushing video from a phone to the TV when the app you want has no TV build at all.

3

MX Player

Amazon Mobile LLC
4,2 1 Md+ 105 MB

Broad codec support and remote-friendly controls, which is more than most players manage.

Works with a remote
  • Media players and file managers
  • Apps with a directional-pad layout
  • Anything you set up once and leave running
Frustrating without a touchscreen
  • Apps that need text entry
  • Anything with small targets or gestures
  • Games without controller support

Make the remote bearable

Text entry with a directional pad is the worst part of Android TV, and there are two fixes. A cheap Bluetooth keyboard solves it outright. Failing that, a remote app on your phone lets you type on the phone keyboard and send the text to the TV, which is enough for the occasional password.

Serv. Télécommande Android TV

Google LLC
3,6 500 M+ 4 MB

The official remote service, which pairs with the phone app and gives you a keyboard for text fields.

Unlock developer options, grant unknown sources to the installing app, move the file with a transfer app, and stick to apps that work with a directional pad.

Frequently asked questions

Will a phone app show up in the TV launcher?

Often not, because the launcher only lists apps that declare a TV entry point. A sideloaded launcher or an app drawer utility solves it.

Is sideloading on Android TV risky?

Same risks as on a phone, with one difference: a TV is easier to forget about, so turn the permission back off when you are done.

Does this work on Fire TV?

The idea is the same, though the menus differ, because Fire OS is a fork of Android with its own store and settings layout.

This is not a rivalry. Each does something the other cannot.

Paying for a VPN: what changes

You are not buying encryption. You are buying an operator whose income does not depend on you.
