“There was a problem parsing the package”: what it actually means
A parse error means Android opened the file, failed to read its manifest, and stopped before it even looked at the app inside. That narrows the problem down a lot. Four causes account for almost every case, and you can tell them apart in under a minute.
The four causes, in order of how often they happen
Work down this list. The first three need no tools at all.

When your Android is too old
Every APK declares a minimum SDK level. If your phone is below it, the package manager refuses to parse the manifest rather than telling you politely. This is the most common cause on phones older than about five years.
The fix is not to force the install, which is not possible, but to find a build of the app from before the developer raised the minimum. APKCombo keeps old versions for exactly this reason, and the version list shows the Android requirement next to each one.
- Find your Android version Settings, then About phone, then Android version. Write the number down.
- Open the app's version history On any APKCombo app page, use the Old Versions link under the download button.
- Work backwards Pick the newest build whose requirement is at or below your version.
- Install and stop updating it Auto-update will push the incompatible build back. Turn updates off for that app.
When the file is not a plain APK
Modern apps often ship as split packages. Android's built-in installer only accepts a single APK, so handing it an XAPK or an APKS produces the same parse error as a corrupt file.

- .xapk with bundled OBB data

When the CPU build is wrong
Native code is compiled per architecture. A file built only for arm64-v8a will not parse on an older armeabi-v7a phone, and an x86 build will not parse on either. Most phones sold since 2018 are arm64, but budget models and tablets are still shipped with 32-bit builds.

Frequently asked questions
Does clearing the cache fix a parse error?
No. The error happens before installation begins, so there is no app cache involved. Clearing the package installer's cache is harmless but almost never the answer.
Do I need to enable unknown sources?
You do to install from outside the Play Store, but a missing permission produces a blocked-install message, not a parse error. They are different failures.
Can a modified APK cause this?
Yes. Repacked or patched files often break the manifest or the signature block. If a file from an unofficial source will not parse, that is a reason to leave it alone rather than to keep trying.
