Chess Opening Trainer: Drills

Chess Opening Trainer is a move trainer for club players who keep losing the same way in the first ten moves. Whether you're building a White repertoire around 1.e4 or the London System, or a Black defense against the Sicilian, Caro-Kann, or French, you build the exact lines you study — move by move, on a real board — and drill them until your hands know them, not just your head.

Most opening apps hand you someone else's move list to memorize. This one is built around your repertoire: the variations you actually play, in the order your opponents actually play them, with your own notes attached to every branch. You are the coach who decides what belongs in your repertoire — the app's job is to make sure you never forget it.

HOW IT WORKS

• Build by color. Start a repertoire as White or Black, then place moves on the board one at a time. Only legal moves are accepted, so every line you save is a real, playable sequence — no typos, no illegal notation.
• A note on every line. Attach your own idea, plan, or "why this move" reminder to each variation — the trap you're setting, the pawn break you're aiming for, the move order you keep forgetting. Your notes travel with the line into every drill.
• Drill from memory. In a drill card, your opponent's replies play out automatically and you supply your own moves from memory. Get it right and the line continues; slip, and the correct book move flashes immediately so the mistake gets corrected on the spot, not three moves later.
• Worst-first Progress. The Progress tab ranks every line by mastery percentage and puts your weakest variations at the top, so a five-minute session always spends its time where you need it most — not replaying lines you already know cold.
• A day streak that tracks real practice, visible at a glance alongside your mastered-line count and average mastery across your whole repertoire.
• Ask the AI Coach. After a slip, tap Ask Coach and get a plain-language explanation of the actual mistake you made in that position — not a generic tip, but why the move you played doesn't work and what the better idea is. Five explanations are free; Pro removes the limit.
