Running a phone with no Google Play Services

Play Services is a system-level library that apps call for maps, push notifications, location, sign-in and payments. Remove it, whether by using a custom system or a phone that never had it, and apps split into three groups: those that never touched it, those that degrade, and those that refuse to start.

Fine without Play Services
  • Media players and file managers
  • Open source messaging
  • Offline navigation
  • Note taking and reading apps
  • Local utilities
Expect trouble
  • Banking apps, which often check for integrity attestation
  • Ride hailing and delivery
  • Anything with an embedded Google map
  • Games with Play Games sign-in
  • Contactless payment

The banking problem

Banking and payment apps increasingly check device integrity, and a phone without Play Services frequently fails that check regardless of how secure it actually is. There is no reliable workaround, and this is the single most common reason people give up on the idea.

The pragmatic arrangement is a second device, or the bank's website in a browser, which is generally not subject to the same check. Decide this before you commit, because discovering it after moving everything across is a bad afternoon.

Messaging, browsing, media, maps and notes all have good options. Banking is the part that does not, so plan for it first.

Frequently asked questions

Will apps from the Play Store work without Play Services?

Many will. It depends on whether the app calls the library, not on where the file came from.

Do I lose notifications entirely?

For apps relying on Google's messaging service, yes, unless you install a compatibility layer. Apps with their own connection are unaffected.

Is this more private?

Substantially, in terms of what leaves the device by default. It costs convenience, and banking is the sharpest edge.

Three different problems with one symptom

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.

The port does more than charging

A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.

Difficult, and never in a hurry

Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
