The port does more than charging

Almost every Android phone made in the last decade can act as a USB host, which means the port works in both directions: the phone can be charged by a computer, and it can run a device of its own. A memory stick, a card reader, a keyboard, a mouse, a game controller, a wired network adapter and a USB sound card all work, usually with no app at all. The limits are power, file systems and a few manufacturers who disabled it.

Finding out whether your phone does it

  1. Try a memory stick and an adapter first If the phone has USB-C, a cheap USB-C to USB-A adapter and any stick formatted FAT32 or exFAT is the whole test. A notification appears within a couple of seconds.
  2. If nothing happens, check the cable and the adapter A charge-only cable or a damaged adapter accounts for most failures. Try a second one before concluding anything about the phone.
  3. Then test with a checker app They read whether the kernel reports host mode support, which distinguishes a phone that cannot from an accessory that will not.
  4. Check the stick on a computer A drive formatted NTFS, or with a single large partition and an unusual scheme, can be perfectly healthy and still invisible to Android.
  5. Look for an OTG toggle in settings Some manufacturers add one, and a few turn it off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity to save power.

File systems are where most of the confusion lives. FAT32 works everywhere and cannot hold a file above four gigabytes. exFAT works on most modern Android versions and is the sensible choice for a stick you move between a phone and a computer. NTFS is generally not readable without help, and the Linux file systems are a root-only proposition. If a drive is invisible, reformatting it as exFAT on a computer solves it more often than any app does.

The apps that help

1

OTG?

Translucent Apps LLC
4.5 1 M+ 5 MB

Answers the one question in the title, in about two seconds, and nothing else. Install, check, uninstall.

2

USB OTG Checker Compatible ?

FaitAuJapon.com
3.7 10 M+ 28 MB

The longer established checker, with a little more detail about what the system reports. Worth a second opinion if the first one disagrees with reality.

3

OTG Disk Explorer Lite

Anda Studio
3.4 5 M+ 2 MB

A small browser specifically for an attached drive, for the awkward phones where the system picker will not show one.

4

Total Commander

C. Ghisler
4.0 10 M+ 5 MB

Total Commander. The most capable two panel file manager on Android, and the one most likely to see an external drive and copy from it without ceremony.

5

exFAT/NTFS for USB by Paragon

Paragon Technologie GmbH
2.8 1 M+ 15 MB

The plugin that adds NTFS and exFAT support to the file manager above. Paid, the reviews are mixed, and it is the usual answer for a drive formatted on Windows.

6

Solid Explorer

NeatBytes
4.5 10 M+ 33 MB

Solid Explorer. The nicest interface of the serious file managers, with good handling of USB storage and network shares side by side.

7

File Manager

File Manager Plus
4.7 100 M+ 23 MB

Strong on copying between an attached drive, the phone and a cloud account, which is the actual job most of the time.

8

Cx File Explorer

Cx File Explorer
4.8 10 M+ 19 MB

Lighter, free and competent, with a clear view of attached storage. A sensible default if you only do this occasionally.

9

X-plore

Lonely Cat Games
4.4 10 M+ 25 MB

X-plore. Dual pane, extremely configurable, and favoured by people who move a lot of files. The interface rewards learning it.

10

Fossify File Manager

Fossify
4.7 100 K+ 10 MB

Open source, no advertising, no analytics, and enough features for an external stick. The right choice if you mistrust the category, which is reasonable.

11

USB Audio Player PRO

eXtream Software Development
4.1 100 K+ 27 MB

For a USB sound card or headphone adapter, bypassing the phone's own audio path. Paid, and the reason some people carry an adapter at all.

12

DriveDroid

Softwarebakery
3.6 1 M+ 5 MB

Makes the phone appear to a computer as a bootable drive. Genuinely useful for repairing a laptop, and it requires root.

What the system will and will not let an app do

Since Android 11 an app reaches an attached drive through the system's own storage picker rather than by opening the device directly. In practice that means you grant access to the drive once, in a dialog, and the file manager works normally afterwards. An app that insists it cannot see USB storage at all is usually an old one that never adopted that mechanism.

Two other things catch people out. Removing a drive without unmounting it can leave a half written file, exactly as on a computer, so use the eject in the notification. And a phone that is already charging usually cannot also host a device from the same port, which is why the combined adapters with a separate power input exist.

Check with an adapter and a stick, format as exFAT, use a powered hub for anything that spins, and pick a file manager that understands the storage picker.

Frequently asked questions

Why can my phone not see my USB drive?

In order of likelihood: the adapter or cable, a file system Android does not read such as NTFS, not enough power for a drive that needs to spin up, or a phone with host mode disabled. Test the drive on a computer to rule the drive itself out.

Can I read an NTFS drive without root?

Not with the system file picker. A paid plugin for one of the larger file managers handles it, and reformatting the drive as exFAT is the cheaper answer if the contents can be moved.

Can the phone charge while something is plugged in?

Usually not from the same port, because it is acting as the host. Adapters exist with a separate power input, and a powered hub achieves the same thing for a longer session.

Does a keyboard or mouse need an app?

No. Both work immediately, a pointer appears on screen for the mouse, and most text fields and shortcuts behave as you would expect. Bluetooth versions are easier and do not drain the phone through the port.
