Flight day, from the alarm to the arrivals hall
A flight day is a string of small checks: is it on time, which terminal, will the boarding pass open, where is the gate, and how do I get out of the airport at the other end. None of it is hard, but each step fails in its own way when the battery is low, the airport WiFi wants a login, or the airline changes something while you are in the security queue. The right apps, set up the evening before, remove most of that.
What to check, and when
| When | What to check | Where |
|---|---|---|
| The day before | Online check in, seat and bag allowance | The airline app |
| Morning of the flight | Departure time and terminal | The airline app, then a flight tracker |
| On the way to the airport | Whether the incoming aircraft is running late | A flight tracker |
| After security | Gate, boarding time, a lounge if you have access | The airline app and the departure boards |
| If it goes wrong | Rebooking options | The airline app, before joining the queue |
| On landing | Data, a ride and the hotel address | An eSIM, a ride app and the booking confirmation |

What to install before you leave
Live aircraft positions on a map. Look up your flight, then the aircraft operating it: if that plane is still an hour away on its previous leg, your departure will not be on time, whatever the board says.
Flight status with alerts for delays, gate changes and cancellations, and a view of where your aircraft is coming from. Just as useful for collecting someone from arrivals.
Forward the booking confirmation emails and it builds one itinerary with flights, hotels and cars in order, readable offline. Real time alerts are in the paid tier.
If you are flying Delta: boarding pass, bag tracking and rebooking during disruption, often faster than the desk.
The same for United, including bag tracking and terminal maps for tight connections.
American Airlines. Check in, boarding pass, and rebooking options offered in the app when a flight is cancelled.
Lufthansa, and the app to have for its connections through Frankfurt and Munich, where gates change often.
Emirates, with the boarding pass, connection details in Dubai and the entertainment programme to browse before boarding.
Ryanair expects you to check in online and charges for checking in at the airport, so with them this app is not optional. Watch when the check in window opens.
easyJet, with mobile boarding passes, flight changes and a reminder when check in opens.
IndiGo, for flights within and from India, with web check in, the boarding pass and add ons in one place.
If a card or membership includes Priority Pass, this shows the lounges in your terminal, their opening hours and the digital membership card.
Buy and install a travel eSIM before you leave, so data works the moment the wheels touch down. Install it at home on WiFi, not at the gate.
Crowdsourced WiFi hotspots and passwords, including airport networks that are otherwise hidden behind a login page.
Download the destination language for offline use. The camera mode reads signs and menus before you have a connection.
The hotel confirmation and address available offline, which is exactly what a taxi driver needs at one in the morning.
Signed in, with payment set up before you land, so the ride is booked while you walk to the exit rather than in the queue.
When the board says delayed or cancelled
- Open the airline app before joining the queue Rebooking options often appear in the app within minutes of a cancellation. Hundreds of people are about to queue at one desk; the app has no queue.
- Check where the incoming aircraft is A tracker shows whether the plane has left its previous airport. If it has not, a delay announced as thirty minutes will not be thirty minutes.
- Screenshot every message and the departure board Timestamped evidence is what a later compensation or insurance claim needs, and nobody remembers the times correctly a week later.
- Look up your passenger rights In the European Union and the UK, long delays and cancellations can bring meals, rebooking and compensation under passenger rights rules, and other regions have their own. Airlines do not always volunteer this.
- Keep the phone charged Find a socket before you need one and carry a battery pack. A delayed traveller with a flat phone has lost the app, the boarding pass and the rebooking at once.
Airline app installed and checked in, boarding pass saved offline, a tracker for the real picture and data sorted before landing. The rest is waiting, which no app has fixed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to print a boarding pass?
Rarely. Most airlines and airports accept a mobile boarding pass, and some low cost airlines prefer it. Check the rules for your specific route, because a few airports and countries still ask for paper.
Why does the tracker show a different time from the airline?
Trackers estimate from where the aircraft actually is, while the airline shows its schedule until it formally announces a change. When they disagree, the tracker is usually closer to what will happen.
Is airport WiFi safe to use?
For browsing and the airline app it is generally fine, since those connections are encrypted. Confirm the network name with airport signs, avoid anything that asks for more than an email to log in, and prefer mobile data or an eSIM when you have it.

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.
A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.
