Games that justify a Bluetooth controller

A controller costs about the price of two games and fixes the single biggest complaint about Android gaming: your thumbs covering the screen. The catch is that support ranges from complete to nonexistent, and the store listing rarely says which. These are the games where it genuinely changes the experience.

Pairing one properly

  1. Put the controller in pairing mode Usually a button held for several seconds until the light flashes rather than pulses.
  2. Pair from Android's Bluetooth settings Not from inside a game. Games read the controller Android already knows about.
  3. Test in a game with known support If the directional pad moves a menu selection, the pairing is good.
  4. Turn off the on-screen controls Many games leave both active, and the overlay covers the screen you just freed up.

Games with real controller support

1

Terraria

505 Games Srl
4.5 5 M+ 175 MB

Full controller support with a proper button layout. Playing it with a controller is closer to the desktop version than to a mobile port.

2

Beach Buggy Racing

Vector Unit
4.5 100 M+ 196 MB

Racing built for a stick and triggers. Touch steering is the compromise here, not the design.

3

Need for Speed™ Most Wanted

ELECTRONIC ARTS
3.3 1 M+ 613 MB

A console game ported to Android, which means the control scheme was designed around a controller in the first place.

4

Real Racing 3

ELECTRONIC ARTS
4.3 100 M+ 100 MB

Real Racing works well with a controller, and the difference in lap times against touch steering is not subtle.

5

Asphalt 8

Gameloft SE
4.6 500 M+ 244 MB

Asphalt with analogue steering rather than tilt. A different game with a stick in your hands.

6

Temple Run 2

Imangi Studios
4.1 1 B+ 152 MB

Included as a counterexample: it accepts controller input and gains almost nothing, because swipes were always the right control for it.

7

Genshin Impact

COGNOSPHERE PTE. LTD.
3.3 100 M+ 688 MB

Full controller support with button prompts that switch automatically. Plays far better with a pad than on glass.

8

Call of Duty

Activision Publishing, Inc.
4.3 100 M+ 2.26 GB

Supports controllers, and matchmaking separates controller players in some modes.

9

Sonic

SEGA
4.1 50 M+ 83 MB

Sonic the Hedgehog Classic. A console game originally, and it feels right with a physical d-pad.

10

Sonic 2

SEGA
4.2 50 M+ 91 MB

Sonic 2 Classic. Same port quality and the same case for a controller.

11

Geometry Dash

RobTop Games
4.4 500 M+ 244 MB

Geometry Dash Lite. Timing is everything, and a physical button is more precise than a tap.

12

Swordigo

Touch Foo
4.7 10 M+ 81 MB

Swordigo. Platforming and combat that map cleanly to a controller.

13

Dead Cells

Playdigious
4.9 1 M+ 1.79 GB

Dead Cells. A premium action game with excellent controller support and on-screen prompts.

14

Stardew Valley

ConcernedApe
4.6 5 M+ 291 MB

Stardew Valley. The full game, and far more comfortable to play from a sofa with a pad.

Where a controller matters most

The strongest case for a controller on Android is not modern mobile games at all. It is playing games that were designed for a controller in the first place, whether that is a console-era port or your own legally owned cartridges through an emulator.

In that context a controller is not an improvement, it is a requirement. On-screen buttons for a game built around a directional pad and six face buttons are a poor substitute no matter how well the overlay is arranged.

Controller transforms it
  • Platformers and action games
  • Racing with analogue steering
  • Console ports
  • Emulated games
  • Anything played on a TV
Touch is fine
  • Puzzle and match-three
  • Strategy with a pointer
  • Card games
  • Anything designed around swiping

Choosing a controller

TypeGood forWatch out for
Console controller you already ownEverything, and it costs nothingSome need a specific pairing sequence
Phone clip controllerPortability, feels like a handheldClip fit with a thick case
Telescopic USB-C controllerNo latency, no chargingOnly fits certain phone sizes
Cheap generic Bluetooth padOccasional useLatency and build quality

The controller you already have is almost always the right answer. Modern console controllers pair with Android directly, and the money saved buys several games.

Pair from Android settings, not from the game. Use the controller you already own, and expect it to matter most for ports and emulation.

Frequently asked questions

Will any Bluetooth controller work?

Most pair fine. Whether a specific game reads it depends on the game, not the controller.

Why do on-screen controls stay visible?

The game did not detect the controller, or it shows both by default. Look for a control setting inside the game.

Is wired better than Bluetooth?

For latency, yes, measurably. For convenience, no. Reaction-based games benefit, turn-based ones do not.

Three different problems with one symptom

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.

The port does more than charging

A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.

Difficult, and never in a hurry

Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
