Numbers that grow while you are doing something else

Idle games run a simple loop: something produces a number, the number buys a better producer, and eventually you reset everything for a permanent bonus. Done well it is a genuine optimisation puzzle played in short bursts, and it is one of the few genres that works on a phone with five spare minutes and no reflexes. Done badly it is a timer that sells you the right to skip itself.

Keeping the genre from taking over the phone

  1. Turn off all but one notification per game Idle games are notification hungry by design. One reminder a day is a habit; six is an interruption.
  2. Check whether it needs to run in the background Most calculate offline progress from the clock when you reopen them, and can be fully closed with no loss.
  3. Watch the download size before installing two Several here run past two hundred megabytes, which is the difference between one game and three on a small phone.
  4. Decide your advert rule on day one Never, or only for the daily bonus. A rule made in advance is the difference between five minutes and forty.
  5. Delete the ones that stopped being decisions When a game becomes tapping the same button while thinking about something else, it is finished, whatever the number says.

Where the money is, and when it is fair

Most of these are free with two revenue models: adverts that double a reward, and a one off purchase that removes them or adds a permanent multiplier. The second is usually good value in a game you have played for a fortnight. Recurring boosts sold as a subscription, and currencies that reset the maths every event, are the point at which an idle game has stopped being a puzzle.

Healthy signs
  • Full offline progress with no advert
  • A one off purchase to remove advertising
  • Prestige systems that change strategy
  • An ending, or a natural stopping point
Warning signs
  • Progress that pauses unless you watch a video
  • Timed events every single day
  • Several currencies with unclear exchange rates
  • Leaderboards that only paying players reach

Pick one with real offline progress and an interesting reset, set a single notification, and decide your advert rule before the game decides it for you.

Frequently asked questions

Do idle games keep running when the phone is off?

Most calculate what you earned from the time elapsed when you reopen them, so yes in effect, and without draining the battery. A few require the app to be running, and those are worth avoiding.

Are they safe for a phone with little storage?

Some are a few megabytes and some are several hundred. The text and number heavy ones on this list are among the smallest games in any genre.

Is prestiging supposed to feel like losing progress?

Yes, and it is the core of the genre. Each reset buys a permanent multiplier so the next run is far faster. Resetting earlier than feels comfortable is usually the right move.

Can I play these without watching adverts?

In several here, entirely. In the advert driven ones the game is balanced around watching them, so either accept that or choose a different game rather than fighting the maths.

Three different problems with one symptom

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.

The port does more than charging

A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.

Difficult, and never in a hurry

Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
