Android apps that still work when the signal does not

Airplane mode, an underground train, a mountain road, a data plan that just ran out: the apps that keep working are the ones that pulled their content down while you were still on WiFi. That download step is the part people forget, so each pick below says what to prepare and when.

Set these up before you leave

Offline features almost always need one action on WiFi first. Ten minutes the night before is the difference between a usable phone and a brick with a signal bar.

  1. Download the maps for where you are going Offline map areas expire after about a month, so refresh them the day before rather than reusing last year's.
  2. Queue playlists and podcasts Downloads pause silently on mobile data if you left the WiFi-only switch on.
  3. Pick the video, not just the series Streaming apps download individual episodes, and a partial download plays for eight minutes and stops.
  4. Add the language pack Translation apps download a model per language, and the default is online-only.

Music and video you already have

Two streaming apps with real offline modes, and one player for the files that live on the phone itself.

1

Spotify

Spotify AB
4.3 1 B+ 135 MB

Downloads work on the free tier for podcasts and on Premium for music. The catch is the thirty-day rule: the app has to see the internet once a month or the downloads lock.

2

Netflix

Netflix, Inc.
4.5 1 B+ 212 MB

The most reliable offline downloads of any streaming app. Set the video quality to Standard unless you are watching on a tablet, since High roughly doubles the file size for a screen that cannot show the difference.

3

MX Player

Amazon Mobile LLC
4.2 1 B+ 104 MB

For anything already on the device. It plays the formats the built-in gallery refuses and remembers where you stopped, which matters when the flight lands mid-episode.

4

VLC

Videolabs
4.0 500 M+ 46 MB

Plays whatever you copied onto the phone, in any format, with no connection and no account. The most reliable offline media app there is.

5

Google Podcasts

Google LLC
4.1 500 M+ 3 MB

Downloads episodes on WiFi and plays them anywhere. Set it to keep a few unplayed episodes and a commute is covered.

6

AntennaPod - Podcast Player

AntennaPod Open Source Team
4.9 1 M+ 10 MB

The open source alternative, with finer control over which feeds download and when.

7

Audible

Audible, Inc.
4.6 100 M+ 164 MB

Downloaded audiobooks play with no signal, which makes a long journey considerably shorter.

Getting around with no data

Offline navigation is the single most useful thing you can prepare, and the one most people discover they forgot at the airport exit.

1

Waze

Waze
4.3 500 M+ 287 MB

Needs a connection for its live traffic, which is the whole point of it, so treat it as the app for when you land and buy a local SIM rather than the one for the drive from the airport.

2

OsmAnd

OsmAnd
4.5 10 M+ 181 MB

Whole countries downloaded as vector maps, with routing that works entirely offline. Dense, but unmatched off the road.

3

MAPS.ME: Offline maps GPS Nav

Maps_Me
4.1 50 M+ 432 MB

The friendlier offline map, with fast search on a downloaded region. The right first choice for most travellers.

4

HERE WeGo

HERE Europe B.V.
3.2 10 M+ 76 MB

Offline maps by country with turn by turn directions, useful when one download needs to cover a whole trip.

5

Sygic GPS Navigation & Maps

Sygic.
4.1 50 M+ 400 MB

Commercial offline navigation with the best voice guidance of the set. Worth it for driving abroad.

Works fully offline
  • Downloaded map areas and turn-by-turn directions
  • Saved places and previously searched addresses
  • Your own GPS position, which needs no data at all
Needs at least some signal
  • Live traffic and rerouting around a jam
  • Business hours, reviews and phone numbers
  • Public transport departures in real time

Reading and learning

A commute with no signal is the most reliable study time most people have, provided the app does not phone home for every lesson.

1

Duolingo

Duolingo
4.7 500 M+ 231 MB

Lessons can be downloaded per unit, and the streak still counts once you reconnect. Practice works offline; the leaderboard does not.

2

ChatGPT

OpenAI
4.8 1 B+ 151 MB

Included as a warning rather than a recommendation: it is useless without a connection, so do not plan a flight around it.

3

Wikipedia

Wikimedia Foundation
4.3 50 M+ 84 MB

Download subject collections for offline reading. On a plane it is the only encyclopaedia that answers.

4

Google Translate

Google LLC
4.3 1 B+ 46 MB

Download the language model before you travel and camera translation keeps working with no data.

5

Moon+ Reader Pro

Moon+
4.1 1 M+ 30 MB

An ebook reader that keeps your library on the phone, with proper typography and no connection needed.

6

Amazon Kindle: Reading App

Amazon Mobile LLC
4.8 100 M+ 146 MB

Books you have downloaded stay readable offline. Download them before leaving, not at the gate.

7

AnkiDroid Flashcards

AnkiDroid Open Source Team
4.8 10 M+ 102 MB

Flashcard review works completely offline and syncs later, which makes a flight a good revision session.

Set the downloads running while you pack. The apps here all work offline, but none of them can fetch anything once the signal is gone.

Frequently asked questions

Do offline downloads expire?

Usually yes. Streaming licences typically last thirty days, or forty-eight hours after you press play, and offline map areas expire after about a month. Refresh them the day before a trip rather than relying on an old download.

Does airplane mode stop GPS?

No. GPS is a receiver and works in airplane mode. What stops is the assisted-GPS data that speeds up the first fix, so the initial lock can take a minute or two longer.

Why did my download stop halfway?

Almost always the WiFi-only setting plus a network change, or storage running out. Both fail quietly in most apps, so check the download list rather than assuming it finished.

Three different problems with one symptom

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.

The port does more than charging

A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.

Difficult, and never in a hurry

Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
