Container Works

You are in the cab of a ship-to-shore container crane. Below you lies a ship full of containers, behind you trucks and trains are waiting – and the clock is running.

Two levers drive the trolley and the hoist, one button locks the twistlocks. Sounds easy? The load hangs on four ropes and it swings: every start, every stop and every gust sets it in motion. Drive too roughly and the container tears off.

• Unload the ship and stack the containers neatly in the yard
• Trucks want one specific container – find it before the driver runs out of patience
• Trains take any two containers

THE WIND PLAYS TOO
Shift 1 is almost calm – perfect for learning. After that it freshens: the windsock and the gauge show direction and strength, gusts push the load sideways. In the late shifts it blows at up to force 7.
