Vietnam is one of the clearest examples of a market where the globally dominant apps are not the ones people use. Messaging, payments, ride hailing, music and shopping all have local leaders, and a phone set up from an international recommendation list will be missing most of what daily life runs on.
The apps that matter most

Money on the phone
Vietnam moved to phone payments quickly and by a different route from most markets: QR codes rather than contactless, and wallets rather than cards.
MoMo. The most widely accepted wallet, used for everything from utility bills to street food.
ZaloPay, integrated with Zalo, which is why it spread quickly.
