What is on a Vietnamese Android phone
Vietnam is one of the clearest examples of a market where the globally dominant apps are not the ones people use. Messaging, payments, ride hailing, music and shopping all have local leaders, and a phone set up from an international recommendation list will be missing most of what daily life runs on.
The apps that matter most
The messenger. Not an alternative to WhatsApp, the default, with payments, official business accounts and government services built in. First install on any phone here.
Zing MP3. The music catalogue for Vietnamese music is far deeper than any international service manages, and the free tier is usable.
The dominant shopping app, with a delivery network to match. Where price comparison actually happens.
The main competitor, stronger for imported and branded goods.
Ride hailing, food delivery and payments in one. Effectively infrastructure rather than an app.
Báo Mới. The news aggregator most people open, pulling together hundreds of Vietnamese outlets.
ShopeeFood. Food delivery with the same wallet and vouchers as the shopping app.
be. A Vietnamese ride hailing and delivery app that competes directly with Grab.
Tiki. Online shopping known for fast delivery and genuine goods in major cities.
FPT Play. Licensed films, series and live football, including domestic league coverage.

Money on the phone
Vietnam moved to phone payments quickly and by a different route from most markets: QR codes rather than contactless, and wallets rather than cards.
Two wallets carry most of it. MoMo is the one accepted almost everywhere, from utility bills to street food, and ZaloPay spread quickly because it sits inside the messenger everybody already had open. Both are distributed only through the official stores, and both refuse to run on a phone whose integrity checks fail.
Which international apps still matter
| Category | Global app | Position in Vietnam |
|---|---|---|
| Video | YouTube | Dominant, no local competitor |
| Short video | TikTok | Dominant |
| Social | Very strong, including for business | |
| Messaging | Messenger | Widely used alongside Zalo |
| Maps | Google Maps | Standard, with Grab for transport |
| Music | Spotify | Present, weaker Vietnamese catalogue |
Far more central here than in most markets, including as a shopfront for small businesses.
Used in parallel with Zalo rather than instead of it.
The one category with no meaningful local challenger.
TikTok. Short video is dominant, and it is increasingly where people shop too.
Setting up a phone here
- Install Zalo first Everything else assumes you have it, including many businesses and services.
- Add one wallet, not three MoMo has the widest acceptance. A second wallet adds little.
- Expect QR codes everywhere Payment, WiFi, menus and business contact. The camera app handles most of them.
- Keep an international messenger too For contacts outside the country, where Zalo has no reach.
- Messaging within the country
- Payments and bills
- Vietnamese music
- Shopping and delivery
- Ride hailing
- Video
- Maps and navigation
- International messaging
- Productivity and documents
Zalo, one wallet, Shopee and Grab. Add those to an international phone and most of daily life works.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Zalo if I only visit?
For a short trip, no. For anything longer, yes, because businesses and services communicate through it.
Can I use international cards for payment?
In larger cities and chains, yes. Wallets and QR are far more widely accepted, especially outside them.
Is Vietnamese music available on Spotify?
Partly. The local services carry considerably more, particularly older and regional material.

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.
A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.
Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
