Your XAPK will not install: work through this list
An XAPK is a ZIP archive holding an APK plus everything that ships alongside it: architecture splits, language packs, and often an OBB data folder that can be several gigabytes on its own. Android's package installer accepts none of that. Something has to unpack the bundle first, and almost every XAPK failure is a step in that handoff going wrong.
You need an installer app
Tapping an XAPK in a file manager usually offers to open it as an archive, which is not the same thing. An installer app reads the manifest inside the bundle, chooses the splits your phone needs, and calls the package installer session API with all of them at once.

The three permissions it needs
An installer that cannot see the file or cannot install packages fails quietly, which is why the same app appears to work for one person and not another.
- Install unknown apps Settings, Apps, special access. Grant it to the installer, not to your browser.
- All files access Android 11 and newer restrict shared storage. Without this the installer cannot reach the Download folder or write OBB data.
- Enough free space An XAPK needs room for the archive, the unpacked parts and the installed app at the same time. Budget three times the file size.
When the game installs but asks to download data again
This means the APK went in but the OBB folder did not land where the game looks for it. The path is fixed and case-sensitive.

If your installer could not write there, install the app first, launch it once so Android creates the folder, then copy the OBB in with a file manager that has all-files access.
Signature and version conflicts
If the app is already installed, Android compares signatures. A bundle from a different source will not install over it, and the message is unhelpfully generic.
- The app is not installed at all
- Same source as the version you have
- You are moving up a version number
- The installed copy came from the Play Store
- You are downgrading
- The bundle came from a different publisher
Uninstalling removes local save data for games that do not sync to an account, so check whether the game has a cloud save before you do it.
Get an installer, give it storage and install permissions, leave three times the file size free, and check the OBB path if a game asks to download again.

Can I just rename the XAPK to APK?
No. The extension is not the problem. The file is a ZIP archive containing an APK, so renaming it produces a file Android still cannot parse.
Can I extract the XAPK myself and install the APK inside?
Sometimes. If the bundle has only one APK plus an OBB folder, yes. If it contains split files, installing just the base APK gives you an app that crashes at launch.
Is an XAPK less safe than an APK?
The format has no bearing on safety. What matters is where the file came from and whether the signature matches the developer's.
