Karaoke on a phone, with and without a connection

Karaoke on a phone has one technical problem that overshadows everything else: audio latency. Android's audio path adds delay between your voice reaching the microphone and coming back through the headphones, and beyond about thirty milliseconds it becomes impossible to sing in time. Everything else is catalogue and community.

Fixing the delay first

  1. Use wired headphones Bluetooth adds 100 to 300 milliseconds. No app can compensate for that, and this single change fixes most complaints.
  2. Look for a latency or calibration setting Better apps let you nudge the vocal track against the backing track until they line up.
  3. Close everything else Audio processing competes with whatever is running, and dropouts sound like your voice cutting out.
  4. Turn off any system audio effects Manufacturer sound enhancement adds processing and therefore delay.

The apps

1

Smule

Smule
4.0 100 M+ 91 MB

The largest catalogue and the strongest community, with duets and collaborations. Much of the song list sits behind a subscription, so check whether the songs you want are free before committing.

2

StarMaker

SKYWORK AI PTE. LTD.
4.3 500 M+ 346 MB

Similar model with a different catalogue and a more forgiving free tier. Worth trying both, since the two libraries do not overlap completely.

3

Zing MP3

Zalo Group
3.8 100 M+ 69 MB

For Vietnamese songs specifically, the catalogue here is far deeper than the international apps manage.

4

Music Maker JAM: Beatmaker app

Loudly
4.6 10 M+ 90 MB

Not karaoke exactly, but a music-making app worth knowing if what you actually want is to build a backing track rather than sing over an existing one.

5

Karaoke - Sing Unlimited Songs

Yokee™
4.0 50 M+ 47 MB

Yokee. A large song library with lyrics on screen and recording, free with advertising.

6

Karaoke - Sing Songs

Gismart
3.9 10 M+ 241 MB

Simple karaoke with pitch feedback, good for singing along rather than recording.

7

Karaoke Online : Sing & Record

Aloha Std
4.1 10 M+ 9 MB

Karaoke tracks sourced online with recording and effects.

8

Musixmatch

Musixmatch
4.1 50 M+ 121 MB

Musixmatch. Synchronised lyrics over whatever music app is playing.

9

YouTube

Google LLC
3.8 10 B+ 195 MB

The largest karaoke track library in existence, as long as you have a connection.

10

Shazam

Apple Inc.
4.8 500 M+ 63 MB

Identifies the song you want before you go looking for its backing track.

Singing with no connection

Almost every karaoke app streams the backing track, which makes them useless on a plane or in a car park. There are two workarounds.

Works offline
  • Downloaded songs, where the app allows it
  • A local video player with karaoke files you own
  • Instrumental tracks in your own music library
Needs a connection
  • The main catalogue in every social singing app
  • Duets and collaborations
  • Scoring, in most apps
  • Anything involving the community feed

VLC

Videolabs
4.0 500 M+ 46 MB

The offline answer: karaoke files with on-screen lyrics play as ordinary video, and VLC handles the formats and lets you mute the vocal track where the file has one.

Poweramp

Poweramp Software Design (Max MP)
4.1 50 M+ 21 MB

Its equaliser can suppress centre-channel vocals on ordinary songs well enough for casual singing, which is a rough but genuinely useful trick.

Getting a decent recording

If you plan to keep the recording, three things matter more than the app. Sing in a room with soft furnishings, because bare walls produce echo the app cannot remove. Keep the phone about a hand's width from your mouth rather than against it. And record a test verse first to check the level, since clipping cannot be fixed afterwards.

Wired headphones first, then pick between Smule and StarMaker on catalogue. For offline singing, use a video player and files you own.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my voice sound delayed?

Bluetooth headphones. Switch to wired, and use the app's latency calibration if it has one.

Are karaoke apps free?

The apps are. Most of the song catalogue is not, and the free selection rotates.

Can I use an external microphone?

Yes, with a USB-C or headphone-jack adapter. It improves the result noticeably and does not fix latency, which is a separate problem.

Three different problems with one symptom

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.

The port does more than charging

A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.

Difficult, and never in a hurry

Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
