Note apps that sync without asking for a subscription

Notes accumulate for years and then get held hostage. The apps that avoid that either keep your notes as ordinary files in a folder you control, or export them in a format something else can read. Both are worth more than any feature list.

Apps that keep notes as files

These treat a folder of Markdown or text files as the source of truth. Sync is whatever you already use, and any other editor can open them.

1

Obsidian

Dynalist Inc.
4.4 5 M+ 18 MB

A folder of Markdown files with links between them. Free for personal use, syncs through any file sync you like, and the notes remain readable text if you ever stop.

2

Markor: Edit Markdown offline

Gregor Santner
4.8 100 K+ 12 MB

Small, offline, no account. Edits Markdown and plain text in whatever folder you point it at. The lightest way into this model.

3

Simple Notes Pro

Simple Mobile Tool

Apps with free sync that works

If you would rather not think about folders, these sync for nothing at a scale most people never exceed.

1

Google Keep

Google LLC
4.7 1 B+ 13 MB

Fast, reliable, syncs everywhere, and exports to Google Docs. Best for short notes and lists rather than long documents.

2

Microsoft Corporation
4.6 1 B+ 105 MB

Free with a Microsoft account, real handwriting support with a stylus, and page hierarchy that suits long-lived reference notes.

3

ColorNote

Notes
4.9 100 M+ 6 MB

Old, unfashionable, and it does exactly what it says with an optional free backup. Runs well on very old phones.

4

Evernote

Evernote by Bending Spoons
3.5 100 M+ 280 MB

Included for completeness. Capable, and the free tier has been narrowed repeatedly, so check the current device limit before you invest years in it.

5

Samsung Notes

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
4.8 1 B+ 86 MB

On a Galaxy, excellent handwriting and PDF annotation, with sync through a Samsung account.

When it is really a task list

Half the people looking for a note app want a task list and do not realise it. The distinction matters because task apps handle repetition, dates and reminders, and note apps do not.

TickTick

TickTick Limited
4.6 10 M+ 93 MB

Free tier covers tasks, reminders and recurring items, with a usable calendar view.

Todoist

Todoist Inc.
4.6 10 M+ 93 MB

Cleanest natural-language date entry on Android. Free tier is limited on projects but fine for personal use.

Workflowy |Note, List, Outline

WorkFlowy
4.6 500 K+ 30 MB

One infinitely nested outline. Suits people who think in bullet points and dislike separate documents.

Microsoft To Do

Microsoft Corporation
4.6 10 M+ 28 MB

Free, simple lists that sync with Outlook tasks. The natural pick if your work runs on Microsoft.

Google Tasks

Google LLC
4.6 10 M+ 10 MB

Minimal tasks that appear in Gmail and Calendar, with nothing to configure.

Note app
  • Meeting notes and reference material
  • Long-form writing
  • Things you will read again
  • Anything with structure you want to keep
Task app
  • Anything with a due date
  • Repeating chores
  • Shopping lists
  • Things you want to stop thinking about

Prefer notes that live as files. If you choose a cloud app anyway, run the export in your first week and look at what comes out.

Frequently asked questions

Which note app is best for privacy?

One that stores plain files locally and syncs through storage you control. Markor and Obsidian both fit.

Can I move my notes between apps later?

If they are Markdown or plain text, easily. If they are in a proprietary format, expect to lose formatting and attachments.

Do I need a paid sync service?

No. Any file sync you already have works for file-based apps, and Keep and OneNote sync free.

Three different problems with one symptom

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.

The port does more than charging

A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.

Difficult, and never in a hurry

Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
