The phone is not broken, it is throttling
Phones get warm because there is nowhere for the heat to go. There is no fan, and the metal frame is the heatsink, which is why the phone you are holding is the radiator. Warm during a game, during fast charging or during navigation in sunlight is expected behaviour. Hot while idle in a pocket is not, and that difference is the whole diagnosis.
What is producing the heat
| When it gets hot | What is happening | Is it a problem? |
|---|---|---|
| Playing a demanding game | The processor and graphics running flat out | No, this is the design working |
| Fast charging | Energy lost as heat in the battery and charger | No, though charging slower runs cooler |
| Navigation in a windscreen mount | Screen at full brightness plus sun plus radio | No, but move it out of direct sun |
| Recording video for a long time | The camera pipeline is one of the hottest things a phone does | Expected, and it may stop recording to protect itself |
| Idle in a pocket | An app awake in the background | Yes, worth investigating |
| While charging overnight, every night | Either the charger or a failing battery | Worth checking with a battery app |
| Immediately after an update | Reindexing and app optimisation | Normal for a day, not for a week |

What actually brings the temperature down
- Take the case off The single most effective physical step. A thick case is insulation, and removing it while gaming or navigating makes a measurable difference.
- Get it out of direct sunlight Sun on a black screen heats a phone faster than the processor does. Shade beats every software setting.
- Drop the screen brightness and the refresh rate The display is often the largest single source of heat, and a high refresh rate costs both power and warmth.
- Stop charging while gaming Charging and a heavy load at once is the worst combination there is, and it is hardest on the battery over time.
- Find the app that is awake Battery settings will name what has been running. An app using power with the screen off is the usual culprit behind an idle phone that is warm.
- Let it cool before worrying A phone that has thermally throttled feels slow. Give it ten minutes off the charger, out of the sun, and see whether normal speed returns.
Tools that tell you what is going on
Reads the processor, the sensors and the battery temperature. The quickest way to see whether the phone is throttling or genuinely idle.
More thorough on sensors and the exact hardware, including per core clock speeds while something is running.
A clear modern readout of temperature, battery health estimates and what the phone actually contains.
Estimates battery wear over time by measuring charge cycles. The tool that answers whether an ageing battery is behind the heat.
Shows charging current in real time, which is how you find out that a cable or charger is the problem rather than the phone.
Detailed battery use per app, including wake locks. Better at naming a background offender than the built in screen.
Charging habits, temperature history and battery statistics in one place, aimed at people who want to keep a battery healthy for years.
Hibernates apps that will not sit still. A last resort rather than a first step, and modern Android already does much of this itself.
- Removing the case under load
- Charging slowly overnight
- Finding and uninstalling a misbehaving app
- Lowering brightness and refresh rate
- Installing a cooling or booster app
- Closing every recent app by habit
- Putting the phone in a fridge, which causes condensation
- Factory resetting before checking battery statistics
When it is worth taking seriously
Heat with swelling is the one that matters. If the back of the phone lifts, the screen bulges, or a case that used to fit no longer closes, stop charging it, stop using it and take it to a repair shop. A swollen battery is a hazard rather than an inconvenience.
Short of that, a phone that is hot when idle every day, or that shuts down in normal use, is worth a service visit. An ageing battery has a higher internal resistance and produces more heat doing the same work, which is why an old phone often feels hotter than it did when new.
Case off, out of the sun, brightness down, and do not charge while gaming. If it is hot doing nothing, find the app; if it is swollen, stop using it.
Frequently asked questions
Does heat permanently damage the phone?
Sustained high temperature ages a lithium battery faster, which is a gradual loss of capacity rather than a sudden failure. The processor protects itself by slowing down long before it is damaged.
Why does my phone get hot only while charging?
Some heat while charging is normal, especially with fast charging. Excessive heat points at the charger, the cable, a dirty port or a battery that is near the end of its life.
Should I use a phone cooler fan for gaming?
They do work, in the sense that moving air removes heat that a case traps. Whether that is worth carrying an accessory for is a different question, and taking the case off is free.

Nothing has infected your phone. Something you installed has permission, and the fix is a list in settings.
A phone will happily run a keyboard, a mouse and a memory stick. It will not power a desktop hard drive.
Hard and fast are different things. Almost every game confuses them, and these do not.
