Racing games sorted by how they handle

Every mobile racing game looks broadly similar in a screenshot and feels completely different in the hands. The useful distinction is the handling model: how the car responds to input, whether there is a grip simulation underneath, and how much the game is steering for you.

The games

1

Real Racing 3

ELECTRONIC ARTS
4,3 100 Tr+ 100 MB

Real Racing. The closest thing to simulation handling on a phone, with real tracks and cars, and it rewards learning a braking point. Heavy on storage.

2

Asphalt 8

Gameloft SE
4,6 500 Tr+ 244 MB

Asphalt 8. The definitive arcade drift model: momentum, boost and stunts, with no pretence of realism. Still the best of the series on older hardware.

3

Beach Buggy Racing

Vector Unit
4,5 100 Tr+ 172 MB

Boat racing rather than cars, and the handling is the best arcade water model anywhere. Underrated and it runs well on modest phones.

4

Hill Climb Racing

Fingersoft
4,2 1 T+ 161 MB

Two-dimensional physics driving. A completely different kind of racing game and one of the few that works one-handed.

5

GTA: Vice City

Rockstar Games
3,3 1 Tr+ 1.42 GB

Included because the driving in it is a handling model people have strong feelings about, and it is a full game rather than a racing title.

Settings that change the driving

  1. Turn off steering assist first It is on by default in most games and it hides the handling model underneath.
  2. Set the camera low A bonnet or bumper camera gives a much better sense of speed and of where the car actually is.
  3. Cap the frame rate rather than chasing it Consistency matters more than the number in racing, because braking points depend on it.
  4. Turn off motion blur It costs performance and makes it harder to judge distance.
Improves the driving
  • Lower camera
  • Steering assist off
  • Consistent frame cap
  • A controller, in simulation games
Costs frames for nothing
  • Motion blur
  • Maximum shadow quality

The storage cost

Racing games are among the largest on Android, because car models and track textures are expensive and there are a lot of both. Several exceed five gigabytes installed, and they patch frequently.

If storage is tight, the older entries in a series are usually a better deal: a third of the size, most of the same handling model, and they run at a higher frame rate on modest hardware. The version history on any app page makes that an easy comparison to make.

Choose on handling model, not graphics. Turn steering assist off, drop the camera, and cap the frame rate.

Frequently asked questions

Which racing game is most realistic?

Real Racing, by a clear margin, though it is still an assisted simulation rather than a true one.

Do these work offline?

Single-player mostly does, after the initial download. Career progress in several of them syncs to a server, so check before a long trip.

Is a controller worth it for racing?

For the simulation end, yes, because analogue steering is a genuine advantage. For arcade drift games, touch is fine.
