Wear OS apps that earn their place on a watch

The watch has a small screen, a small battery and a processor from several phone generations ago. That rules out most categories immediately. What remains is a short list where glanceability, sensors or offline playback make the watch genuinely better than the phone in your pocket.

What a watch is actually good at

CategoryWorth it?Why
Fitness and heart rateYesThe sensor is on your wrist, which the phone cannot match
Offline music for runningYesThe whole point is leaving the phone at home
Navigation promptsYesA glance beats holding a phone while walking
PaymentsYesFaster than unlocking a phone
Messaging repliesPartlyFine for a short reply, painful for anything longer
Browsing, video, gamesNoScreen and battery make all three unpleasant

The ones worth the space

1

Spotify

Spotify AB
4,3 1 T+ 144 MB

Offline playlists on the watch with Bluetooth headphones is the feature that makes a running watch worth having. Download over WiFi and expect it to take a while.

2

AntennaPod - Podcast Player

AntennaPod Open Source Team
4,8 1 Tr+ 10 MB

Podcasts stored on the watch, no account, no subscription, and it keeps position in sync when the phone reconnects.

3

Google Maps

Google LLC
3,2 10 T+ 276 MB

Turn prompts on the wrist, which is genuinely better than a phone when walking in an unfamiliar city.

4

Google Fit

Google LLC
3,4 100 Tr+ 35 MB

The baseline tracker. Worth using rather than the manufacturer's own if you want the data somewhere portable.

Setup that saves most of the battery

  1. Turn off always-on display The single largest saving available, worth several hours.
  2. Prune which apps can notify Every buzz wakes the screen. Notifications are the second largest cost after the display.
  3. Disable continuous heart-rate tracking Switch to periodic unless you are actively training. The difference over a day is substantial.
  4. Download music over WiFi overnight Bluetooth transfer of a playlist is slow enough to be annoying and it warms the watch.
Keep installed
  • One music or podcast app with offline files
  • Navigation
  • Payments
  • One fitness tracker, not three
Uninstall
  • Duplicate fitness apps all reading the same sensor
  • News and social apps
  • Anything with a permanent background sync
  • Watch faces that pull live data every minute

Watch faces cost more than you think

A face that shows weather, calendar, step count and a stock ticker is running four data sources continuously. Complications refresh on a schedule whether you look at the watch or not, and an elaborate face can cost more battery than every app you installed. If the battery drops faster than it used to and nothing else changed, this is usually why.

Keep one music app, one tracker, navigation and payments. Turn off always-on display and simplify the watch face before blaming anything else.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the phone nearby for watch apps?

Many work standalone over WiFi or on a cellular watch. Offline music and fitness tracking work with no connection at all.

Can I install phone APKs on a Wear OS watch?

Modern Wear OS runs its own app packages and installs through the watch Play Store. Sideloading is possible over ADB but most phone apps have no watch interface.

Why is my watch battery worse after adding apps?

Usually notifications and watch face complications rather than the apps themselves. Cut both before uninstalling anything.

This is not a rivalry. Each does something the other cannot.

Paying for a VPN: what changes

You are not buying encryption. You are buying an operator whose income does not depend on you.

Archive tools on Android compared

For a plain ZIP either works. For a split, password-protected archive, only one does.
