HanziStep: Learn Chinese

Build your Chinese character skills, one character at a time.

Designed for adult learners aged 18 and over, HanziStep brings a character dictionary, guided handwriting and pronunciation practice together in a simple study space. Look up a character, explore its meaning and practise writing it from memory.

LOOK UP AND UNDERSTAND
Search by Chinese character, pinyin or English. Explore meanings, common readings, radicals, stroke counts, related words and selected example sentences. Browse characters by radical or stroke count.

WATCH, TRACE AND RECALL
Watch stroke-order demonstrations, trace each stroke and practise without the outline. Use hints when you need help, replay the demonstration or start another attempt. Save an unfinished practice session and continue later.

STUDY WITH CHARACTER LISTS
Browse HSK recognition and writing character lists, everyday topics and your saved characters. Create your own lists and import or export them through the Android file picker. HSK lists are study references; HanziStep is not an official HSK product or a complete exam-preparation course.

LISTEN AND PRACTISE
Use your device’s text-to-speech voice to hear characters, words and sentences, and compare Mandarin tones. Try character-recognition and listening quizzes for HSK levels 1–3. Record up to 30 seconds of your own voice and play it back for comparison. Recording requires optional microphone permission and is discarded when you leave the pronunciation practice page. Automatic pronunciation scoring is not provided.

EXPLORE READING AND POETRY
Read a small starter library of short passages, classical poems and basic grammar notes. Open characters from a lesson to look them up or practise writing them. English translations and explanations support your study.

KEEP A STUDY HABIT
Set a daily goal, review your practice history and return to characters that need more work. Optional study reminders use Android notifications. Learning progress and custom lists are stored on your device. You can export and restore a backup yourself; HanziStep does not provide an account or its own cloud-sync service.

The dictionary and stroke data are available locally. Reading characters, words, sentences and passages aloud uses your device's text-to-speech engine and requires a suitable voice; availability and network use depend on that engine. Reminder delivery may be delayed by Android battery settings.

The interface supports English, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Brazilian Portuguese, Indonesian and Hindi. Dictionary meanings and learning explanations are mainly in English.

FREE STUDY AND OPTIONAL PRO
Dictionary lookup, stroke demonstrations and basic writing practice are free. Free users have a daily quiz allowance and can choose a rewarded ad for an extra quiz session, subject to availability. HanziStep Pro is a one-time purchase that removes ads and unlocks unlimited quizzes, custom training and unlimited custom lists. The app displays your Google Play price. Non-Pro users may see banners and frequency-limited app open or results-page ads.
