The *Tao Te Ching*, also known as the *Laozi*, *Tao Te Ching*, *Five Thousand Words*, or *Laozi's Five Thousand Characters*, is a pre-Qin dynasty Chinese philosophical work revered by various schools of thought. It is traditionally attributed to Laozi (Li Er) of the Spring and Autumn period (though this account suggests it may have been written by a combination of author, commentator, and copyist). It is a significant source of Taoist philosophy. The *Tao Te Ching* is divided into two parts: the original text contained the *De Jing* (Classic of Virtue) and the *Tao Jing* (Classic of the Way), without chapter divisions. Later, the *Tao Jing* was rearranged with 37 chapters, followed by the *De Jing* from chapter 38 onwards, and divided into 81 chapters. It is the first complete philosophical work in Chinese history.
